[REVIEW] The role of agricultural machinery and digital technologies in sustainable crop protection

In light of the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity, water quality and public health, reducing pesticide use is a priority.

Agricultural machinery and digital technologies can contribute to this transition, provided that the ways in which they are used evolve: more precise interventions, prevention, crop diversification and new farming practices. Their adoption, however, depends as much on their technical performance as on the realities of farm work and farm organisation.

These issues were at the heart of the Researchers and Professionals Meeting held on 11 December 2025, organised by the PPR Cultiver Protéger Autrement in partnership with the PEPR Agroécologie et Numérique, Carrefours de l'innovation INRAE, Agreenium, the Grand Défi Robotique Agricole and the Toulouse-Auzeville agricultural high school.

Articles from this event are now available in the journal Innovations Agronomiques. It reviews the contributions and discussions focusing on the role of agricultural machinery and digital technology in reducing pesticide use.
