A look back at the PEPR AgroEcoNum Annual Conference 2026

On 6 February 2026, against the magnificent backdrop of the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes, the annual conference of the PEPR Agroecology and Digital Technology brought together around a hundred people (research organisations, universities, schools, the National Research Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture, and socio-economic partners).

It was organised in the wake of the PEPR’s participation in the Trans Numériques.

Presentation of the new winning projects

During the event, the five winning projects for 2025, which will commence in 2026, were presented:

  • Past2Eco: From crops of the past to crops of the future for agroecology: Using digital solutions to harness adaptive genetic diversity - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW
  • IPIDEO: Study of plant-insect interactions and factors influencing behaviour using digital tools and video tracking - VIEW THE SLIDE SHOW
  • TreeD-Resist: AI-based 3D phenotyping and modelling to predict immunity and resilience in agroecological orchards - VIEW THE SLIDE SHOW
  • AI4Diet: The contribution of AI to ration optimisation models to support the agroecological transition of livestock systems in different contexts - VIEW THE SLIDE SHOW
  • AIHerbage: Artificial intelligence for the holistic efficiency of grassland areas in terms of livestock farming and grassland management - VIEW THE SLIDE SHOW

Inspiring talks

The guest speakers addressed the topics of multimodal artificial intelligence and knowledge platforms, highlighting their crucial role in sharing scientific data and in ways of capitalising on, accessing and interacting with reliable and robust knowledge to build the tools of tomorrow.

  • The challenges of multimodal artificial intelligence - Dino Ienco (INRAE) - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW
  • What specifications for knowledge platforms in agroecology (an agronomist’s perspective) - Frédérique Angevin (INRAE) - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW
  • An example of a knowledge platform for the Global South - Krishna Naudin (CIRAD) - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW

A word from young scientists

As in previous editions, young scientists took the floor.

Presentation of the winners of the 2025 PhD/postdoc call for proposals

The winners of the 2025 PhD and postdoctoral call for proposals presented their projects, illustrating the diversity of approaches to overcoming scientific barriers for the benefit of agroecology.

  • Multi-agent modelling of the combined effects of farming practices and earthworms on soil structure and proposed soil health indicators - Amandine Ouédraogo (PhD) - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW
  • Environment recognition and interpretation for safe autonomous navigation and targeted action in agricultural settings - Alexis Frizot (PhD) - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW
  • Towards an explainable multimodal model to predict legume resistance to insect pests - Océane Gourdin (PhD) - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW
  • Development and implementation of learning approaches to study RNA modifications linked to adaptation to climate change - Emma Rodriguez (PhD) - VIEW THE SLIDESHOW

Report on a futuring design workshop

Four PhD students from the PEPR Agroecology and Digital programme presented the results of their work carried out as part of a futuring design workshop organised during the Trans Numériques event. Alongside around fifteen PhD students funded by the PEPR Cloud, AI, eNSEMBLE, NumPEx, AgroEcoNum and Réseaux du futur programmes, they were supported by Annie Gentes’ team (CY School of Design), involved in the LINDDA project. They imagined possible and desirable futures by combining ADEME’s decarbonisation scenarios with issues relating to biodiversity, water, health and food.

Participatory workshops

The event provided an opportunity to share the programme’s progress and to contribute to collective thinking on its scientific approach and associated activities. Four participatory workshops offered opportunities for discussion on experimental sites, phenotyping resources, knowledge platforms and the programme’s scientific outreach programme. The outcomes of these workshops will be used to shape future initiatives.

This event confirmed the role of the PEPR AgroEcoNum as a key platform for accelerating research at the intersection of agroecology and digital technology, and for strengthening synergies between disciplines, areas of expertise and professional communities, with the aim of helping to build a high-performing, sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.

See you next year!
